A collar is an important piece of safety gear for our constant companions, but is a harness a better choice for your dog? If your dog is a puller or a jumper, a front-clip harness may provide greater control and minimize these behaviors. Collars may restrict the airways of dogs affected by tracheal collapse, as well as brachycephalic dog breeds—think Pugs and Boston Terriers—so a harness may be a safer option. Narrow-skulled dogs or breeds with a thick neck are often masters at slipping out of a collar—and thus may be less likely to escape from a securely fitted harness.

Does your pup sprawl out and snooze the day away? Give those lazy bones something to drowse on with a pillow-style bed, like this one. Faux-sheepskin gives it a plush top, and its stuffing includes cedar shavings to help deodorize the bed. The cover is removable with a zipped seam, so it can be easily removed for machine washing. It isn't chewing resistant, so we don't recommend this one for teething pups. Not everything is about Fido though -- this bed includes a water-resistant base panel to...

Each time you give your dog a bath, give his collar a scrub. Soak the collar in a bowl of hot water and dog shampoo, use an old toothbrush or other soft-bristled brush to clean out the nooks where dirt collects, and then hang the collar to dry. Leashes and harnesses may be cleaned in the same way, as needed. A leather collar requires gentler care—rather than soaking the collar, use a toothbrush soaked in a cleaning solution and gently brush away grime. Rinse, towel off, and hang the leather collar until it is completely dry.
